Anything can be confusing and "ambiguous" if you throw enough uninitiated at a situation. It's just that people that lack proper knowledge or training would rather say something is "ambiguous" than admit that the problem lies with them.

Always blame somebody else for problems, never yourself.

    Pretty much

You get 288 if you know what you are doing and do not make the necessary assumptions that you have to make in order to get 2

Having passed through college or any math class doesn't prove anything, even that someone is working in a particular field doesn't necessarily make it an expert in the subject.

When your job relies on solving equations and manipulating them, you can bet it does as far as understanding the fundamentals of solving equations

Math is a language we engineers, scientists, economists, etc... are fluent in.

To us this is not-ideal delivery method, but it has a definite meaning.

Looking at the thread, I think there is a clear dividing line. Native math speakers: scientists, engineers, programmers, etc... say 288. Others who are effectively non-native speakers may interpret 2 due to their lack of fluency.

    B
    I agree

If the person who wrote the equation meant 2, he would need to rewrite the expression with () encompassing the entire denominator

When dealing with equations, you can not guess what is implied. You have to use a consistent framework and follow it verbatim.

i'm still baffled why nobody's answered my question. anyone with a g5 powermac upgrade to an off the shelf video card yet?

i wonder about video card compatibility because i don't see a single driver on nvidia or ati for mac. and the specifications for the 1900 xfx and nvidia 7950 both don't even list mac compatibility. this is really making me think twice about buying from apple.

    anyone please help??

It is definitely more difficult to find video cards for g5 powermacs. If ATI or Apple carry the card you want, then you're just find and it's very easy. I bought an X800 and swapped out my 9600xt for Aperture. Works great and was very easy to install.

Hopefully with the intel machines it will be easier to find cards, but it will depend on Apple. It is really up to them.

I've got a 9600XT for sale if anyone wants one :D

Mac'nCheese: I think that in elementary school you first learn to multiply and then to divide. So first you multiply and then you divide.

That left to right rule is not following the order of the letters.
So for this case it is not PEMDAS but PEDMAS...

The Arabs give us the numbers that we use nowadays, and they do write from right to left.

So your math teacher is telling us that Mac OS X is giving us a wrong answer...You might need to watch waiting for Superman.

Am I the only one who sees the threat of moving to Android as a petty attempt to get Steve to reply? The writer of this email obviously didn't do any research, and he obviously doesn't understand that Steve would see right through a threat like that. This whole thing is a non-issue. I don't care if someone knows where my iPhone has been. I'm worried about far more important things such as protecting my financial information, which I keep in an encrypted disk image in case my laptop gets stolen.

True, but 64-bit in a 32-bit envrionment is still going to run only at 32-bit or not at all. But mlrproducts is right, they do have a while.

it doesn't matter if you have a 64-bit processor and OS, you have to have 4Gb of RAM to run in 64-bit.

I'd get it if it were free!!

gmail is free... so why can't mobile me?

Now I start thinking about it, I've never paid Google a single cent, but I use
    *Gmail
    *Google search engine
    *Google maps
    *Google Earth
(*And I used Picasa for a short period of time)

Maybe some orther stuff but the point is... its all free!:)

    Today:
Google -> Advertising - Free Services
    mobile.me -> No Advertising - Paid Services

    Tomorrow?:
    mobile.me -> Free Services - iAds (thanks to Html5)
    iWork.com -> Free Services - iAds

They are clearly entering googles market. Online services & advertising. I see Apple as the only company who could successfully compete with google.

Maybe I'm out in right field with this suggestion, but how about a further separation between the black Macbook and the white, other than color?

Macbooks (white) - Yonah and integrated graphics (960?)
Macbook (black) - Merom and the new integrated graphics (965???)

That would certainly justify the black's higher cost and would give it more of a punch to be that PB 12" replacement.

This is good news and very much needed.

Some of us professionals need the upgrade potential of the Mac Pro where we can upgrade our video card and other cards but we sure don't need all the raid card slots and I/O ports on the front and back.

I'd love to see them go with a smaller form factor and less slots for storage and I/O to bring the price down some while keeping the processor options the same. Memory slots...well if the new final cut is using the 16bit architecture, the more the merrier.

Allowing the processor options is the big thing to me in any version of it.

    5+ hours Merom

Mathematica 8. As far as I am concerned the most powerful math software available. People don't shell out thousands of dollars for a product that can't do basic math.

So Steve is saying there is no database of locations? Thats just an outright lie.

Steve did not actually say anything. Someone said he did, MR decided it must be fact. The ease with which these headers can be faked or even fake mails can be be put ion gmail boxes was shown conclusively last year.

These stories should have a much more pronounced disclaimer.

What I really wanted to say is that Google is going to run their datacentres on ARM

There you go again with facts. Citation needed. I think what you want to say here is :

"There was some speculation last year that Google might switch to ARM for their datacenters and servers after an acquisition of an ARM technology company".

There is no way you can state what you are stating as a fact right now. ;)

But the fact that Google bought a company developing ARM processors and also hired engineers from PA Semi that previously worked on Apple's A4 chips

Yes, that is a fact you can state.

means that they ARE going to produce their own ARM chips

Not all acquisitions end up in workable projects. Google does a lot of acquisitions, some of them just end up as IP port-folio fodders, some of them get recycled into products, some of them just get abandonned. Who knows what Google is planning ?

either for their own Android phones or more likely for their datacentres.

How is it more likely for their datacenters, in light of Google's staff saying ARM isn't ready for the datacenter ? I'd say at this point, it's more likely for the Chrome OS based netbooks that will probably never see the light of day officially beyond the Cr48.

As the promo in the UK ends on the 7th October, does that mean I won't see them filter through until then?

It's a shame if it is.

Why do some end in September and others in October?

    http://www.apple.com/uk/backtoschool/?cid=WWW-EUUK-BTS20060801-8EBFY

"* Buy a qualifying Mac and an iPod from the online Apple Store or an Apple retail store purchase must be made between August 1st and October 7th and receive a mail-in rebate up to 100 (UK) / 160 (Ireland). Terms and Conditions apply. "

    I need one so soon!

The promo has nothing to do with new launches...they are completely independent and serve a public that is not interested nor in need of a cutting-edge notebook. The combo MB x iPod is wonderful for most, and it will be attractive even if the Merom notes are in the market.

...obviously, is the rollout of a "Kindle Tablet" running Honeycomb.

The custom Amazon front end would have icons for:

Kindle Reading App (and Kindle Store)
Amazon Music Player (with cloud storage) and MP3 Store
Amazon Prime Streaming Video (and the Amazon Video Store)
    Amazon Android App Store
    Cloud Storage Manager
    Some sort of Web Browser

And underneath that is Honeycomb. Maybe they throw in a free Amazon Prime subscription with purchase (free 2-day shipping on Amazon purchases).

Here would be Amazon leveraging all their strengths into a physical device that could seriously challenge the iPad in ways that no other vendor can, because it creates an Amazon "ecosystem" with the worlds biggest store for physical goods attached.

    People like to shop.

I'd rather have Apple ( or ANY company for that matter ) compete rather than having it throttle its competition.

Do you really want Apple to have no competition? Oh, I wouldn't be surprised if this starts affecting a lot of Apple's competitors, for a prolonged period of time - various countries would start to look at Apple regarding its competition laws.

Apple didn't buy up the production to throttle the competition. They had the balls to bet on the iPad being a run-away winner. Think about it. Months into marketing a brand new product category, Apple acted to secure future capacity at levels no one else anticipated. Had Apple been wrong, it would have hurt them terribly. As it is now, Apple is barely meeting sales demand levels.

Apple's competitors want a piece of the market but don't have the confidence in their product to put their money down in advance. RIM had their chance to buy production ahead, they didn't.

I doubt that's really Apple's issue. I'm sure they're more concerned about getting their 33% of everything iPhone.

Any lawyers out there? Isn't this bordering on breaking some monopolizing or anti-competition laws?

    No.

...No prob with a H.264 at 2-6 mpbs. Files for a 90 minute movie at 700 mb (near-DVD-quality...I just hope for a renting solution as this is what people do with MOVIES.... If they have another solution: bring it on; it's gonna make sense.

Nicely put. Shocking to believe what modern compression and modern (read lower) expectations of the average film watcher have allowed distriution solutions to do.

I'm expecting a slick, consumer oriented solution to the video portion of the iTunes music store, but I'm not holding my breath for a 'movie' store or movie rental store solution.

At a compression value I would accecpt, files will still be to big for the internet of today / average power of a computer today / the HD's of today.

Sorry to be a wet blanket. We shall see.
