Re: movie store - Whatever the final product is, Apple's engineers have spent a lot more time thinking about it than we have in these forums.
More than anything, Apple focuses much more the on the customer's experience so I have faith that the final result will be elegant and work.

People, they only released the MacBooks two months ago!

They're not gonna upgrade them in a matter of weeks.

It'll be the new chips in the Pro models, and AT BEST a slight speedbump to the Black MacBook (maybe the 2.16 GHz chip)...

Fine, but prove to me it's because of the metric system.

I don't know that it does.... I was merely rebutting the point that learning the Imperial measures gave US kids a competitive edge.

This pay-per-use cloud accessible storage seems to be a good idea only as a supplement to on-board device storage.

Ownership of data is a concern. If I buy music through the cloud service does that affect my ownership of the music/data? Can I download the music to my hard drive and have unrestricted access to it after I cancel my cloud subscription? At that point, why would I want to continue paying for service for something I already have in my possession. And why not have the option of streaming this data from my own computer on which it's already contained and for which I already pay to have internet bandwidth (I realize that some people may have very limited bandwidth allowance)? If I'm only going to be keeping a small percentage of my audio online then it's one more thing to keep track of and manage. If I keep everything on the cloud then I'm paying a substantial monthly fee that annually could pay for a lot more memory on my device in the first place. Problem solved.

I just returned from an international trip. When I travel is typically when I use my iDevice most often. Music in the rental car, watching videos during down time or travel time. Expensive, bandwidth hungry cloud data is not an option [for me] when traveling internationally. I also take long road trips with a significant amount of time spent outside of service areas.

Too many downsides. Too many apparent restrictions.

    Some has to say it:

If MacOSXRumors is predicting it, then it's never going to happen.

I thought macrumors just culls rumors from other sites, rather than producing stories/rumors themselves.

EDIT: Sorry... didn't see the huge "OSX" in between "Mac" and "Rumors." :)

Just to add a little fuel to the fire - I found this on MacSurfer - likely another source, sounded a little different. The plot thickens...

http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Automation/Display_Panels?Article=/Automation/Display%20Panels/H9R6N2M2The original article here is based on this smarthouse article, and has a link to it :) So unfortunately, the plot stays the same :)

Excluding the pro and business market is what puzzles me. I can see photographers, artists and others taking advantage of a light pen to draw, anotate, and edit photos. I can see all sorts of people bringing them into meetings to write notes and do presentations connected to a projector. I do not see it being that useful in the home market (other than as a standard computer), but what the heck do I know. What the hell do any of us know :). Interesting to speculate though.

I'll have to ask my partner about the graphics stuff - she's a high end graphic designer and a painter. My first thought is "the touch screen can't mimic her hand tools"... I figure that the accuracy of where she's touching the screen, the pressure she's exerting etc, will not be enough for real work

If it provids full laptop functionality (-minus keyboard) and a light pen with solid hand writting recognition, I would certainly consider purchasing. But don't skimp on power, needs those 2GH Core2 duo's) and a decent 3d video card. Great on the airplane also. There is a market for this (not for me), but if they do this then developers will write for it as if it's a laptop... they'll keep thinking inside the box. And if the software is written for a laptop but works on a tablet, many people will simply buy a laptop.

I can't forsee the other applications possible, but if Apple forces a shift in user and developers thinking then there's room for some great stuff. So far I've assumed the way to do this is to not be full power but fill a different niche (at least to start)... I may be wrong.

Most home authomation if I remeber correctly is based on X10 or something like that. If it is different than X10, then they would need to also sell little devices that connects to lights and other electical devices so they can be remotely controlled.Yeah, hopefully Apple would pick one of the standards and work with that - even if they also sell little devices to plug into lights etc. It's useful to be able to put a different brand in occassionally.

salmon, you hit the nail on the head with that post. A device like that would be amazing, I could totally see myself using it in classes, etc. And though I'm not sure about the $300 price point, but I think its completely doable for under $1000.

if they could make it sub $800 they would take the education market by storm:cool:

I wonder if it will be interesting to revisit this quote in a year or two ? :D

For any of these cloud-based services, what is the streaming bit-rate/SQ? What if you don't have a signal?

I have concerns about the agreement with Amazon, as other posters have wisely pointed out....I'm sure Apple's will be similar, if not better....time will tell...

Why is everyone freaking out about re-installing the OS? Lion creates a recovery partition as part of the install process. If you need to reinstall, just reboot and hold down option...pick the recovery partition and voila.

Does that work if the hard drive tanks and fumbles, crashes, burns, and is a useless pile of crap?

Hasen't Apple been working on the iPhone for "a few years" at least?

No, the rumor mill has been grinding on the iPhone for several years. Apple hasn't necessarily been working on it for that long.

The good news is that it sounds like the plant wasn't damaged. While I am sure making batteries for Apple is not on the top of their priority list, their economy starting back up will help speed their recovery. A little bit of good news I hope.

couldn't Samsung simply get back at Apple by NOT making Apple's stuff? I mean, come on.

You would think that on the surface. People asked, if Apple wants to kill Flash, why doesn't Adobe just kill, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Dreamwever, Premiere and InDesign on the Mac, that would cripple Apple as a creative platform for designers, well, Adobe does not want to kill more than 50% of its revenue stream.....the answer is money! Samsung loves the profitability of making Apples stuff! They do not want to lose that golden goose.

Regarding using a case with the tom tom kit--I bought a casemate (comes shiny and somewhat rubberized) and it fits fine in my tomtom car kit.

check out the website. maybe it's a solution for you.

Thanks, that's good to know! Which case from them do you have?

The iPhone 4 is already dated relative to other phones on the market. To have a phone on the market for 18 months without an update is insane.

It was good 3 months ago, it's good now and it still be good 3 months from now. It only makes sense to wait and get everything in order if a major change/upgrade is coming. Competition is not going anywhere.

Yet another sign Apple is going to kill the Mac Pro.

You'll see! With Final Cut Pro on it's deathbed there is no way the Mac Pro is sticking around!

    /s

doubtful, this is a key switcher market... it would be crazy to axe the very thing that will continue to switch the PC builders/gamers over the next 5 years... this is a key ingredient to apple taking the industry over with time.

But if Apple had gotten on board with Verizon a year earlier, those numbers would probably be reversed.

That extra year that Apple sat on their ass with AT&T was the crucial year that allowed android to gain traction and mindshare.

Neither your or I know what contract details with AT&T prevented Apple from opening up Verizon earlier than they did, so claiming Apple "sat on their ass" is just your silly opinion.

Once the 'greatly anticipated' Verizon launch finally did come, it was met with a large chorus of "who cares?" from the crowd - the crowd that had gotten their droid phone 6 months earlier.

Again you make a wild-assed leap of logic. I, like many Verizon users, met the news that the iPhone was available on my favorite carrier with, "Oh dam, I'm locked into a two-year contract with a ****** Android Incredible."

Your basic point that Apple needed to open up the iPhone to more U.S. carriers to avoid market share loss is correct and generally regarded as such by most analysts. However, from the launch of the first iPhone, Apple has struggled to meet the accelerating demand for its products, so adding more U.S. carriers may have not been as smart as us outside the company might second-guess.

Not PC guys, but good industrial and interface designers will. Starting with a clean sheet with little or no knowledge on the subject is an advantage; you tend to have different perceptions on how things work/could work. This gives a far greater idea base with simpler implementations as a result.

    Advantage Apple.

So Apple has an advantage here because they have no experience in a market where it traditionally takes to get a device right? No, Apple doesn't have an advantage, any more than they did with the iPod - but they didn't need that advantage then either.

Apple could change the way phones are made as well, but only if they rethink the device from the ground up. Most phones have too many features that it takes too long to figure out how to use, don't have enough battery life, and are too painful to get hooked up to your computer so you can transfer photos and songs back and forth. Apple has the synchronization stuff down. If you can sync it like an iPod - and charge it in the process, its already leaps above most phones out there. But they cannot miss the interface.

If they want a camera on it (optional in my opinion) they have to make it dirt simple to use (scroll wheel to zoom, middle button to snap) and to get the photos taken on it into iPhoto. Otherwise, skip it altogether. And please don't make me fumble around to find the right button to hit to answer a call. Open it to answer the call, close it to hang up. And if you aren't going to put the number buttons in a tranditional layout - don't put them on there at all. I don't have the time or energy to learn some idiotic circular arrangement. I'd rather you put the numbers up on a touch screen and let me smudge up my phone than deal with a non-standard button arrangement. It also has to be hearty - I don't have time for a phone that stops working if I drop it 3 feet onto a carpeted floor.

It goes on and on. And that is why the interviewee is saying it's so hard. Apple does a pretty good job of industrial design, but even they may need an iteration or two to get it right. And in the mean time the current players could play some catch up.

    We can all hope! ;)

    Cheers
Yeah, that's probably what it will turn out to be: hope, rather than reality. But when an iMac comes out with any Core 2 Duo processor and Leopard pre-loaded, I'm buying. An updated graphics card is higly welcome, as is more standard RAM, but the processor and OS are most important to me. Too bad Leopard is still quite some time off...

Does anyone know, if a new OS comes out soon after the release of a new computer model/revision, how long that 'soon' may be for Apple to offer a free upgrade to that new OS to all buyers of that particular computer? (Is that still understandable English? Worse, is it still English?)

    This is total BS.
ARM CPUs are far far behind Intel's non-Atom series in terms of performance.
This is due to their RISC architecture. That's also why they consume less power than x86.
If you're saying in 2 years ARM's performance may catch up to current Atom, then, it may be possible.
But compared with Core i series? It's the biggest joke I've ever heard.
