So far is Flip phone 3 candy bar 0. I like the flip phones long before they where a fad and I will contine to like them after the fad wears off. I didnt go back to candy bar when they where back in again. I stuck with the flip phone and contine to like the flip phone for the advatages I listed above.

I don't think the flip phones are fads. Look at all the phones on the market, and the most of them are flips. The most desireable ones are usually the flip phones and have been a while. I remember the first Nokia candybars were extremely popular but those never had that good of features and were cheap. In my opinion, flip phones are more durable (in most cases) and look better.

so once these are released, what are the chances if my MBP was broken Apple Care would replace it with a new Core 2 Duo one? It's possible. I've heard of iBooks replaced with MacBooks and iMac G5's with Intel ones.

Given that Apple has always went for the mid market components I don't think this phone will appeal to the phone nerds/freaks like me. But then us being freaks don't represent much of the market.
Personally I would love to see Apple pair up with Sharp to do a phone.

Currently I would say sharp has the best high-end mobile on the market that isn't symbian/WMP. You can't bet a phone with a 3.2MP camera, 2x optical zoom and a 640X480 screen. It's a really pity that if Apple brings out anything it will be 1.3MP camera, no zoom and prob a 320x240 screen... but I guess at least it will look good...

Most of the really good mobile phones are restricted to Japan only so hopefully apple can bring some of the cool stuff around the world.

The rumors talking about the iPad 3 are mostly saying it would be a different model than the current iPad. There's multiple Macbook Pros. Don't be surprised if there are multiple iPads, like an iPad pro.

I, like a few other members here, believe this may be the most likely scenario. People keep talking of a rumored "iPad 3" being launched in the Fall, but I think it might just be a misunderstanding, and it's actually a larger iPod Touch...somewhere in the 5 to 7 inch range. Apple really pushes the touch as a gaming device, and this size (5 to 7 inches) would be great for that. In my opinion, the 3.5" size of the current touch/iPhone makes it hard to game..by the time you put onscreen controls (virtual thumbstick, action buttons, etc), you have very little screen for gameplay left.

i am sure apple is finding the world of phone carriers complex and difficult.

The biggest hangup of theirs is probably the sale of media and ringtones. They simply probably do NOT want Apple to provide the solution. Even if Apple's storefront is better, they will not want money going elsewhere.

that said, Apple's best option here is to simply launch the product themselves. Offer a GSM phone that is unlocked. The phone companies will get a clue later on when people want the product

I 150% agree! Cell communications need to open up. Contracts and locked phones will keep the phone industry from growing and maturing in the same way computers did.

SI is superior in conversions only
Imperial is superior as I actually have a feel for the numbers

It's also easier in calculations - each unit is a derivative of the seven base units, each with a conversion factor of 1.

Yes, let's not change it because YOU actually have a feel for the numbers.

As for having a feel for the numbers, he's not alone. I have nearly 20 years of professional experience using Imperial units as a mechanical engineer, as does every mechanical engineer in the U.S. Switching systems (or, rather, making it mandatory) will require all of these engineers to re-learn the formulae they've known and used for decades. That's the equivalent of millions of man-years of engineering experience down the drain. That isn't progress, no matter how much you might want want to believe it is.

We need to switch to the metric system, what we have now is ****ing crazy when looking at the rest of the world...this is coming from a bio major who has to deal with SI units daily

    SI != metric.

I deal with both daily - our electrical system (Watts, Amperes, Volts, Ohms, etc.) are all metric and SI. Using Imperial units doesn't make understanding those SI units any harder.

For the love of your education system, do make the switch! I'm an engineering student from Canada. So I have to learn both imperial and SI. Imperial is such a pain in the ass.

I was an engineering student in the U.S., and I learned to use both systems - and yes, calculations using SI units were simpler. But the reality is that mechanical engineers here do not measure refrigeration in Watts, they use Btuh or tons of refrigeration. We don't use degrees Celsius, we use degrees Fahrenheit. We don't measure airflow in liters per second (which isn't even an SI unit; the proper convention would be cubic meters per second), we use cubic feet per minute. And as such, that's the system I've grown comfortable with as a professional.

Really, most opinions I see in the US to keep the imperial system is because you're not accustomed to it.

Which translates to an incredible cost of switching, and a near-certainty of an avalanche of errors.

...the difference between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius is 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, hardly a noticeable difference when it comes to weather forecasts.

You'd make a great point if weather forecasts were all we used temperature measurements for.

For chilled water, a 12 degree (F) temperature differential equates to 2 gpm per ton of refrigeration. Every mechanical engineer knows that. Force him to use SI units, and the game changes completely; calculations that could once be done in your head now require a calculator. You would achieve the opposite effect.

I'm not so sure. If a recipe calls for 2 tablespoons, is it not just as easy to measure out 30ml?

Measuring or counting out two is always easier than measuring or counting out thirty.

Are there really any benefits to the Customary scale, or do we just perceive benefits because it's what we're used to?

I don't know that there are benefits to using customary units; but there are indeed benefits to not switching units. Not the same thing.

Metric is just easier to learn. Period.

    That's one opinion. Period.

If it were so damn easy, everyone would know it, now, wouldn't they?

Mobileme is certainly worth more than free. Apple doesn't scrape your emails and other data to target adds at you a la Google.

I could see Apple making some features of Mobileme free. I don't think they're just going kill a revenue stream but they could offer a basic free Mobileme account which gives you.

    A me.com email address with 5 aliases.
    Sync features
    "Find my damn iDevice"
    Calendar, Contacts, Bookmark sync
    Web page
    Gallery
    iWork.com

    Then roll out Mobileme Pro

Make iDisk more like Drop Box.
    Enhance the sync
    Online Backup
    Cloud Music (Lala style)
    iWork.com Pro (adds collaborative editing)
Whatever other cool stuff they can deliver

I think that would be a really good solution!

If they made it a little taller it should be easy-peasy for Apple to fit the necessary cooling. Hey, if they're making it taller, they could add a 3.5" Hard Drive which is much cheaper than laptop hard drives and we could finally get a 500GB Mini.
this is pretty well thought out. I can see it happening

sure we do. Developer Tools for example. also there are more 64 bit 3rd party apps out there, that I dont feel like looking up right now.

however, your right, consumer apps are primarily 32 bit, and os x apps like ical, mail etc, wont go 64 bit until leopard.

yeah, but we don't know if Leopard will be totally 64-bit anyways (we'll find out soon enough)

So Apple's not going to upgrade despite securing the parts for three months so Verizon can pay off R&D on the 4? Well, I won't get one like I planned.

This rumor to me isn't believable. When those contracts are up, half of them will be looking for new phones. And if the 5 looks the same as the 4, people might just think its the 4 and get a different phone I think rather than get a perceived year and a half old phone.

I'm most concerned as to what this means for ipod. Are the ipods dead this year?

Why not move their iOS hardware to Intel now that Samsung seems to be losing their ability to respect their own customer's IP? Intel would have no motivation to co-opt Apple IP (Intel doesn't build products), and they have the most sophisticated fab technology on earth.

    Ah, standby power you say?

If Apple moves their Macs away from Intel that'll encourage a lot of Mac users including myself to consider switching to buying Windows machines. Boot Camp is an important Mac feature and Intel processors are the best.
Windows 8 will work on ARM, as Microsoft has said.. current builds already do, apparently.

[/SIZE]Merom won't be going away in 2007. So no yutz need apply for next mobile processor amticipation duty all of next year, unless of course you mean the 4 core Mobile version of Merom coming next Fall '07. :)And Santa Rosa will add to Merom's Power next Spring. That's what I'm waiting for as well. :)

I was wondering where you heard that there is going to be a 4 core mobile version of Merom coming Fall '07. Any roadmaps i've read for intel, including that one you linked to (and the Tom's Hardware one) don't mention it. In fact, I didn't even read of a desktop 4 core processor being released until let alone 2007 in a laptop.

I'm wondering where you heard this because I'm getting a MBP for college next summer and if there were quad core MBPs coming out in the fall I would wait.

(Oh, and if I misinterpreted 4 cores to equal Quad core on a single processor, please clarify what you meant.)
